Geting lost- first of many!

Great trip tho, good to get to know all the new folks. Although there were an abnormaly high amount of cartographical cock-ups and spoon related injuries it all went rather smoothly.

But the visit to powderhall bronze was great (wonderfull to see that conceptual art hasnt killed the sculpture just yet)

and the beautiful little town of Caputh where we stayed that smelled gloriously peaty like breathing a fine malt.

And the fucking bloody awesome tweed factory!

Then getting back to Glasgow to prepare for the real ale societys night out to the troon ale fest, but no bastard showed up so we went to the pub and got drunk with Bruce and Nicholas

Which more than made up for the disapointment. Chin Chin!X

professor meyer's topophone was one of the earliest working acoustic location devices in 1880, the theory behind this was eventualy put to use on the Japanese War Tubas pictured below which could pick up the rumble of aircraft at great distances until radar was invented circa WW2

This guys called harry partch and he's made quite a few

and here is the worlds largest instrument at 3.5 acres constructed by Leland W. Sprinkle, this is up on oddmusic.com which is fantastic for these things.

recently ive been thinking about some of the more light hearted sides of the systems we take for granted so for anyone bothering to read this (both of you) i have an idea, one of the fundments of physics is that nothing moves faster than the speed of light, it is a constant and to go faster would require an infinate amount of energy to accelerate any mass above 0. Are shadows faster than light? They get everywhere before light. they have a mass of 0 but clearly exist and as such do not require an infinate source of energy to make them go faster than light. They are a sum total of nothing but an infinate amount of nothing compared to a restricted amount and speed of light. So the question then is...
Is nothing faster than something?

Mapping project.

Recently ive been thinking alot about invisibility.
Social, personal, global and its posibilities.
When we were doing the mapping project it just sort of struck me while watching the street, I cant see radio waves or wind or gravity, i only know they exist by the effects they cause- i know (or rather it is thought that) we are all made of subatomic particals which are asumed to be in order or in a state of chaos, but we cant see any of these systems.

When i realised i was the most forgetable member of the class (my name wasnt even in the hat) i started thinking about how to manufacture invisibility. during the group performance stuff i was taking note of the monologue in my head about how i was avoiding the gaze of the group.

I don't know if co-incidence is the word but saturday is the one year aniversary of the first (confirmed) invisibility cloak

Although- and heres the science part, given the correct conditions and alignment of atoms it is possible on a subatomic level light can pass through normal matter whilst the odds of every molecule in a human body being in this particular state are infinately improbable given an infinate amount of time this scenario will inevitably play out, so (via the miasma of quantum theory) this may or may not have already happened or be presently happening.

or its all just an INSANELY complex mind-fuck. whatever floats your boat.

The other issue here is perception- the eyes play tricks so why trust them?
Vision is a response to a stimulus not a reality all we see is reflections of light bouncing off what we assume are objects- colour is non existant it is a construsted system of understanding that some surfaces reflect light at different frequencies than others... so where does this leave the colour blind, or in the extreme the fully blind? what would a blind man take pictures of?

that was all a bit serious wasn't it?

i'll finish on a joke.... Two bee keepers are in a bar, "wow ive had a hard day, lots to do! ive got to look after ten thousand bees spread out over eight hives in an acare of prime flower beds, and i mean prime flowers from three continents in there. It has been a hellova week. ive seen things that made my eyes bleed, ive swam with sharks, ive had another mans head near my loins and we've made a film which premiers tommorow. I would feel really bad about giving the plot away but no-body reads this anyways so here goes....

Myself, Will and the long-suffering Richard have crafted a peice of contemporary cinema which can only be summed up in the word "Balls". It is the after they were famous story of Salvador Dali and Marcell Duchamp, after the wave of surrealism dries up they are left as unloved dejected hobbos trying to eek out a living in Glasgow. There are some wonderfully poetic scenes alongside alcohol abuse, jazz kazoo, pipe smoking, rampant transvestism and (where we spent the entirety of our budget) narration by Morgan Freeman.

For paramount issues of international copyright and piracy it shall be posted in its majesty after the premier

Mural down in the merchant city, if youve not seen it its worth a look, i like this photo cause its got a bit of a looney tunes false road feel to it.

exhibits at goma exploring positive and negatives of space, as interesting as any object is it can only be seen in the context of the functional empty space around it.

I'm quite interested in the idea of portraiture in concert with psychology, is it possible to create a representation of someones mind as opposed to their body? Our lucian and his famous relation would seem to think so, to what extent can the visual language show about someones intent?
can a brush stroke express a sneer?
can a motion of the wrist while sculpting express love?

surrealism would seem to suggest as much, mattas fabulously expressive strokes were often put in at speed using huge brushes or rags, so as to capture the moment and the feeling of its creation.

Post 3- Revelations

ive been toying with the animation idea and expanded the idea with some rough video and sound edits using final cut and garageband, video is shot on my digital camera so hardly ideal and the sound is a heavily processed acoustic guitar, it's not hugely polished as you can tell.

but for me the idea of using myself as subject is quite apealing because it would give me the chance to examine the social conection between the artist and the other. By creating both inwardly focused work and outwardly focused work it would give the opertunity to compare the two, especialy to see how honest i would be in a self critical scenario.
also the idea of projecting this kind of video/ animation work onto things such as sculptures or manequins could be very interesting. I think there has to be a distinction between someones physical representation and an expression of the more intangible aspects of their persona so using light in this manner could be quite good, possibly even onto less tangeible objects like water, ice or smoke.

ive found an interesting wee site for photo self portraiture

some of its good some not but interesting nonetheless.
this inwardly focused idea of photography is very well expressed by this fella

anyways i'm moving on with some explorations with paint we'll see how well they come out and i'll keep you all posted.

since my last post ive been working on these pictures.

Ive had a rather interesting idea involving projecting these but i'm keeping my cards to my chest just now cause i don't know if i can pull it off. watch this space

Originaly i had just wanted to compare the angles to each other in terms of recognition because i find it amazing that out of everyone in the world we can still recognise people even though everyones face conforms to the fundamentaly same structure and variations are measured in millimeters, yet we still find them and recognise them.
This for me developed into an interesting experiment into exploration of 3d form via a 2d medium, looking at the physicality of an object or persons presence in space.
Following this ive been looking at sculptures purely expressing the body in space
Such as Boccioni's "unique forms of continuity in space"

and picasso's 'woman in the garden"

Ive also been working on this little gent

i dont think ill take him too far tho, it was more of an experiment than anything.

Also started reading Jean Baudrillard's
early work, "The System of Objects" mostly to indulge the post-socialist in me.........

then I'll begin.

Following on from some portions of the last project I found myself thinking about personal representation and the concept of portraiture. For me there is a question in portraiture about what you are actualy depicting, are you making a clear representation of the physicality of a persons body? Are you creating a representation of the moment of contact between that person and yourself in time and space? Are you representing the more intangible qualities of a persons soul? Or is it ultimately self focused, is the portrait a reactive process and therefore a record of the artist rather than the subject?

lots of questions, start as they say at the start.

Representing the physicality of the human form.

One of the things i was fascinated by from a recent project was a work by Christine Borland in which she took the skulls of two unknown people from Africa and re-constructed their faces using forensic techniques. This was particularly good in the context of this topic as it is a purely physical portrait due to the model being very dead.
Interesting to note that forensic techniques modeling faces from skulls have been around for quite some time this was done ritualisticly by the people in Jericho although none of the archaeologists can decide which peoples skulls were chosen for this treatment. Although their methods were not as sophisticated as modern day forensic reconstruction

Other similar examples of this are death masks such as thisaztec mask or napoleons death mask

other than this ive been doing some sculptures and quick studies of anatomical forms,
Starting with some creative cleaning in the studio

then thinking and playing with some ideas of three dimensionality

This is relatively flat but it gave me a good oppertunity just to experiment, i like the cracking in the clay here.

Then i started in on some 3d stuff again investigating.

then working on more complete maquettes with armitures, this is a work in progress just now when its done ill post as a giff animation.

next up im gonna do some people so if youve got a spare 15 minutes to pose for photo/sketchies then give me a shout else ill have to do it myself and frankly no-one needs to see this face in stereo!
